Random Shape Series

Repeating patterns in architecture are utilized in elements at a variety of scales; scale of a facade, perforated ceilings, and wall relief's to carpeting and tile stonework. Classical methods can be used to generate such patterns, such as, frieze and wallpaper groups. As the desire to develop organic or random patterns increases other methods need to be investigated.
One such methods is controlled randomness.

Random patterns are based on the generation of ever changing size, location, and orientation of simple patterns and shapes. The Votive series develops squares, circles, and ellipses. A generative framework is developed within which randomness can be controlled. The patterns are further wrapped around the holder so that all shapes flow over adjacent edges

The framework allows for varying the amount of randomness and also holding some elements constant to form a physical frame or supporting lattice.

The layered version further enhances the areas are random and the areas that are held constant.

With today’s movement from one-of-many to many-of-one, the potential is growing for streaming digital generation and fabrication, so that no two items are ever exactly the same..
